March 22, 2024 — Letter to Senate Standing Committee on National Finance — General Council has prepared this letter for the use of the UCC national Guaranteed Livable Income (GLI) network. The letter asks United Church members to write to members of the Senate Standing Committee on National Finance urging them to support Bill S-233.  The Social and Ecological Justice Commission of Shining Waters Regional Council suggested that we share this letter with other members of Social Justice Network of Ontario Regional Councils (SJNORC). March 19, 2024 — Gibimishkaadimin is looking for 10 Indigenous youth from across Canada and 10 non-Indigenous youth from Southern and Eastern Ontario to participate in a reconciliation canoe trip this summer. Gibimishkaadimin (Gib-EE-mish-KA-dim-IN) is an Anishinaabemowin word representing “Paddling together by boat”  and is the name of a reconciliation and relationship building opportunity for youth. This trip began over 5 years ago as an intentional youth reconciliation project between three United Churches in Toronto and is now a part of Indigenous Ministries and Justice and the General Council of the United Church. The purpose of this trip is for youth to participate in collaborative and experiential learning through an Indigenous perspective.  Gibimishkaadimin seeks to provide youth with the opportunity to foster relationships with each other, the land and the water during a canoe trip in northern Ontario. March 1, 2024 — General Council Commissioner Nominations: As the voting members of General Council, Commissioners serve an essential role in The United Church of Canada. Following the guidance of the Holy Spirit as revealed during the gathering, Commissioners set policy and take action on a wide-range of questions including those of doctrine, worship, governance, and public-witness. Commissioners elect the Moderator who will serve as the spiritual leader of the church until the next regular meeting. Deadline: September 15, 2024
