A Journey to Freedom

June 22, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The nineteen month occupation of Alcatraz in 1969-70 was considered the beginning of asserting Native rights in North America,

Come and hear about this little-known but timely story behind Richard Oakes, who was born in St. Regis, Akwesasne, and led this historic occupation that is credited for helping to change the US federal government’s Termination policies with respect to Native American peoples and culture.

The program will include films on the occupation of Alcatraz,
discussion and refreshments.
