SUMMARY:Annual Theology Conference
DESCRIPTION:“Discipleship in the Shadow of Empire: Lament\, Resistance\, and Hope” \nTheme Speaker: Dr. Sylvia Keesmaat \nHow do we grapple with the many interlocking uncertainties that surround us globally\, nationally\, and locally? How do we find space to step away from the anxious voices to be held by the calm places that can grant us rest? \nOver four sessions\, Sylvia Keesmaat will delve deeply into the wisdom of the biblical story to explore how those who lived in the shadow of empire in biblical times created communities of lament\, resistance\, and hope. Each session will weave together biblical texts in dialogue with a current crisis: environmental collapse\, genocide\, abusive political power\, and the oppression of the marginalized. \nDrawing also on the wisdom of Indigenous writers and Palestinian Christians\, we will dare to dream of a community where lament helps to carry our grief\, hope enables us to imagine a healing future\, and resistance binds us together in love. \nWorkshops Include: \nMusic and Meditation: Improvisation\, Lament\, and the Practice of Resistance: Peter Woods and Nick Gummeson (Field Notes Collective) \n“I Am About To Do a New Thing”\, The Theology of Toward 2035: Growth Animator Greg Smith-Young \n\n\nThe Fibres That Bind: Rev. Dr. Christine Johnson \nMake your Church Website Sing!: Rev. Stephen Fetter \n\n\nFor Further Information about the Conference\, Workshops\, How to Register to attend either in person or on line\, and other details\, see: https://annualconference.ca/

SUMMARY:Global Partners and 2SLGBTQAI+ Justice @Parkdale United
DESCRIPTION:Parkdale United Church is pleased to invite Parkdalers and members of the wider community to an opportunity to meet and hear from visiting United Church of Canada LGBTQIA+ global partners from Mozambique and South Korea on October 6\, 06.00 – 08.00pm ET\, at our church. \nWe will also be welcoming members of various Ottawa queer and human rights community organizations.  \nThe visiting partners – Rev. Lee Donghwan\, Rev. Susanna Kim\, Rev. Helder Carlos and Wanda Sue Mavulula\, are leaders and advocates working at the intersections of faith\, theology\, human rights and LGBTQIA+ justice. They bring lived experience and theological insight from communities navigating different social\, political and ecclesial realities\, including religiously driven stigma and exclusion\, criminalization\, violence and shrinking civic space. Their stories remind us that justice is not the work of one nation or one church—it is a shared calling that transcends borders.
