SUMMARY:Forest Teachings with Albert Dumont
DESCRIPTION:Forest Teachings Workshop with Algonquin Elder\, Albert Dumont\nA Pazaman (Smudging Fire) Circle Collective Project: A Film Screening and Art Making Workshop Series in celebration of Ottawa’s 200th Anniversary\n\nDate: Saturday\, Sept 12\, 2026\nTime: 2:00 – 5:00 pm\nLocation: Riverside United Church\, 3191 Riverside Dr\nAge: Intergenerational – suggested minimum age is kids about ten years old\, accompanied by their parent/guardianPrice: $10 per person\nPurchase your ticket here: https://www.eventbrite.com/…/forest-teachings-workshop…\nNote: if the price of $10 is a barrier to attendance at the workshop\, just send us an email at schoolofnl@gmail.com and we can work something out!\n\nWORKSHOP DETAILS\nThis three hour workshop is broken down into two parts:\n1. Film Screening\nFor the first hour\, we will watch Albert’s film\, “Forest Light\, Forest Wisdom”\, together\, in community. Through the film\, Albert will walk us through the forest and share powerful Algonquin teachings\, wisdom and stories. The film is about 30 minutes long. We will then leave room for participants to discuss the film\, inviting them to share their thoughts and feelings about it.\n2. Art Workshop\nThe film screening will be followed by an art workshop where participants will be invited to create art that is inspired by what they learned\, helping them integrate the teachings into their heart and mind. Each workshop will have a different art modality\, for example: collage\, water colour\, sculpting\, or mixed media.\n\nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES\nGuiding Principle: To share the teachings of Elder Albert Dumont through a filmed Forest Walk and accompanying art workshops\, fostering connection\, warmth\, wisdom\, and healing to all who engage with it.\nThese workshops have two main goals. The first one is to provide a space for healing and spiritual growth. Through the film\, Albert will share Forest Teachings that cover such topics as humanity\, peace\, wellness\, purpose and understanding who we each are as human beings. He will share ancestral teachings on living an honourable life in relationship with the natural and spiritual worlds. These teachings provide nourishment for the mind\, body and spirit.\nThe other main goal is to educate the people of Ottawa\, and others visiting Ottawa\, during its 200th Anniversary\, about who the Algonquins are. We will do this by taking this film\, filled with Algonquin teachings\, out into the community to connect with people in a heart-led way\, ensuring participants learn more about who the Algonquins are – whose land we are living\, working and playing on. Through this learning\, we will help to increase understanding\, love\, connection and friendship – which is all anti-racism and anti-oppression work.

SUMMARY:Annual Theology Conference
DESCRIPTION:“Discipleship in the Shadow of Empire: Lament\, Resistance\, and Hope” \nTheme Speaker: Dr. Sylvia Keesmaat \nHow do we grapple with the many interlocking uncertainties that surround us globally\, nationally\, and locally? How do we find space to step away from the anxious voices to be held by the calm places that can grant us rest? \nOver four sessions\, Sylvia Keesmaat will delve deeply into the wisdom of the biblical story to explore how those who lived in the shadow of empire in biblical times created communities of lament\, resistance\, and hope. Each session will weave together biblical texts in dialogue with a current crisis: environmental collapse\, genocide\, abusive political power\, and the oppression of the marginalized. \nDrawing also on the wisdom of Indigenous writers and Palestinian Christians\, we will dare to dream of a community where lament helps to carry our grief\, hope enables us to imagine a healing future\, and resistance binds us together in love. \nWorkshops Include: \nMusic and Meditation: Improvisation\, Lament\, and the Practice of Resistance: Peter Woods and Nick Gummeson (Field Notes Collective) \n“I Am About To Do a New Thing”\, The Theology of Toward 2035: Growth Animator Greg Smith-Young \n\n\nThe Fibres That Bind: Rev. Dr. Christine Johnson \nMake your Church Website Sing!: Rev. Stephen Fetter \n\n\nFor Further Information about the Conference\, Workshops\, How to Register to attend either in person or on line\, and other details\, see: https://annualconference.ca/
